Club Training with Josef
Pflaum:
| Josef Plaumn, a German dog trainer and Schutzhund decoy with 15+
years experience in training both Schutzhund and security dogs and a very
good friend of Fred and Claudia's, comes to Texas each year and teaches
and trains with us. Josef was instrumental in helping us to develop
this club and has given us a lot of training support over the past few years.
Josef's last trip to Texas was in late September 2001 through October 2001.

Texas A&M University
Vet School OPEN HOUSE:
| The Texas A&M Veternary School of Medicine hosts an Open House
each year. This event consists of many activities and draws a crowd of
up to 10,000 people.
On March 23, 2002, the BVWDC setup a booth at the
Vet School Open House, and displayed club photos of schutzhund training at
our club. We played Schutzhund training videos that displayed all phases
our our sport...tracking, obedience & protection. We passed
out GSDCA-WDA brochures and issues of the WDA Newsletter. Our
own Schutzhund dog in training, Arco aus Deesenland, owned by Mike
Seaton, was there to greet folks and receive hugs and pets from the children!
This was the first taste of Schutzhund that has been
displayed in our community, to the best of my knowledge. Our goal
was to introduce our club and the sport of Schutzhund to the Brazos Valley
community, and demonstrate the positive image of the German Shepherd dog
and other breeds that train in Schtuzhund.
As a response to our booth, we have had many inquiries
from individuals interested in Schutzhund, and also from other local
animal organizations. We feel that by supporting our communtiy and
learning about other local groups, we can display a POSITIVE IMAGE
of our sport and the German Shepherd Dog, as well as other breeds
that train in Schutzhund.

TRIAL RESULTS!
| On April 20, 2002, the BVWDC held their first schutzhund
trial on their training field in Somerville, Texas. Mr. Klaus Ambrosius,
SV judge from Germany, presided over our trial. The trial was a SUCCESS!
We had two entries for SchH titles, seven entries for the BH and three
entries for the AD. All participants passed!
The day began at 6:30 am and the tracking tests was underway.
After tracking, we returned to the training field, took a short break and
started our SchH obedience tests at 8:30 am. There were two SchH entries,
so when this concluded, we began the Part 1 of the BH tests. Around
11:00 am, it was getting warm in Texas, so we decided to go ahead and do
the SchH protection tests before lunch.
By noon, all was ready for the fabulous catered lunch!
Texas style barbeque brisket and sausage, with twice baked potatoes, coleslaw,
baked beans and the trimmings!
We resumed the trial at 1:30 pm with Part 2 of the BH
tests. By 2:30 pm, the tests were complete and the judge tallied up
the scores. Claudia Orum, BVWDC President, conducted the awards ceremony
and Mr. Ambrosius concluded with final comments of the day. Trophies
were awarded the High in Trial as well as for all passing BHs.
Claudia presented Mr. Ambrosius with a very nice plaque. The plaque
was 13 inches in width, in the shape of Texas, with a GSD head logo in
the Panhandle.
The trial resumed in the late afternoon after the temperature
dropped for the AD (endurance test).

Dog Day Afternoon - College
Station, Texas
| On June 8, 2002, the BVWDC setup a booth at the 1st Annual
Dog Day Afternoon fund raiser and community canine
social. The Dog Day Afternoon consisted of local "canine" groups which
included several breed rescue groups, the Brazos Valley Search & Rescue
Club, agility clubs and also area vendors. This event was planned
to assist in raising money for the groups involved, and also to acquaint
the communtiy on different activities they can do with their dogs. The day
consisted of each club having a booth, holding hourly raffles, and many
activity demonstrations. The Brazos Valley Working Dog Club activity
demonstrated "Schutzhund Obedience" at different levels. Our demonstrators
were Mrs. Wendy Reichert with her GSD, Dakota and Mrs. Katie Breland with
her GSD, Falco. |

"German Style Conformation
Seminar"
* Instructor RUSS OSBURN*
GSDCA-WDA National Training Director, explained
the
proper handling procedures for the German Show
Ring,
and explained show ratings and the German Breed
Survey.
on SATURDAY, JUNE 22, 2002
SUMMARY: The seminar began at 5:00 pm with approximately
20 people in attendance. The group consisted of local breeders, some
club members and the general public wanting to learn more about German Shepherds.
Russ did an excellent job of explaining the intricate levels of the breed
survey, and demonstrating proper handling and stacking techniques to club
members. After the seminar, we dined at Czech/Tex Restaurant, a local
steakhouse in downtown Snook.

BVWDC Conformation "Affliation
Show"
SUMMARY: The Brazos Valley Working Dog Club conducted
their GSDCA-WDA Affiliation Conformation Show at the Snook City Park, in
Snook, Texas. The weather was warm, but the atmosphere was good.
Some club members participated as "handlers" for the first time... but they
did a "mighty fine job" in my book, and the show went well. Russ Osburn
officiated the show, and gave everyone a good idea of what a "real" show
is all about. Presentation ceremonies concluded the show around 1:00
pm, and our club "passed" its show affiliation.
THANK YOU, Russ for taking the time
to come down and hold the seminar and officiate at our affiliation show.

BVWDC holds "Canine Field
First Aid" Seminar
SUMMARY: The Brazos Valley Working Dog Club hosted
their Canine Field First Aid Seminar at the Snook City
Park, in Snook, Texas. Dr. Sherry Graham, DVM, a US Army
Veterinarian currently doing resident work at Texas A&M
University conducted the seminar. The purpose of
the seminar was to provide basic information to dog handlers
that will assist them while in the field. There
was a wide range of topics covered including how to access
your dog's condition in an emergency situation and how
to stabilize for transport. Dr. Graham discussed
procedures that may be used to stop bleeding, treat shock,
perform CPR when needed, how to recognize symptoms for
poisonous snake and spider bites and bloat. Participants
had "hands on" practice on both stuffed and real dogs
to learn the technique of muzzling, finding a pulse and
restraining a dog. BVWDC members provided refreshments
and snacks during the break and a drawing was held for
door prizes. Claudia Orum, BVWDC President, presented
Dr. Graham with a nice plaque of appreciation.
There was a total of 24 participants consisting of individual
dog owners, area SAR members, and BVWDC members and associate
members.
